Welcome to EA Engineering’s Fish Passage Restoration Portal

EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is working on a number of fish passage restoration projects throughout southern New England. The purpose of these projects is to restore the anadromous fish runs that once existed in many streams and rivers throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. To learn more about the projects EA is involved with, click on the project links located to the right.

Many rivers in New England, such as the Blackstone and Woonasquatucket, once supported an abundance of anadromous fish. These anadromous fish traveled upstream in the spring to spawn in fresh water and once mature, would spend the majority of their lives in salt water. As dams, weirs, bridges, and other obstructions were built during the Industrial Revolution, it became difficult for anadromous fish to travel upstream to spawn in the rivers.

The goal of the fish passage restoration projects occurring in southern New England is to reintroduce anadromous fish populations through the installation of structure assisted fish passages, such as Denil fish ladders, or through dam removals. These projects will help to restore self-sustaining populations that once occurred in these areas.
